Taking this class involves accessing two (2) Zoom teleconference calls either on a computer or via phone on Tuesday May 12th and Friday, May 15th both from 2:00pm-3:00pm.

Please see the Resource tab for the NOVA: Swing! worksheet.

The NOVA Program is designed to get Scouts excited to explore the basic principles of STEM and discover how fun and fascinating STEM can be. These awards are meant to encourage active participation and are best suited for smaller groups to give every Scout a chance to participate through demonstration and discussion. Additional work outside of the Zoom meetings will be required for the completion of this award.  Tuesday's meeting will provide an introduction and overview of the requirements, initial discussions, and instructions for Friday's meeting, which will include each Scout demonstrating or sharing the results of their experiment.

Requirement #1 of this award is for Cub Scouts to watch (or read) 1 hour about anything related to motion or machines and come up with at least 2 questions or ideas from what they watched or read.

Requirement #2 requires the completion of a rank specific Adventure or a choice of two Options. If a Scout has not completed one of the Adventures previously, they can still participate; however, they will need to complete either Option A or Option B in order to earn this award. Please see the worksheet on the Resource page.

Requirement #3 will involve designing their own playground fixture OR game/sport OR invention that uses a lever and will be done with parents with items typically found around the house. The intent is that no purchases or trips to a store will be needed. Cub Scouts should plan to share their drawing or sketch or model with the group on Friday.

NOTE: The virtual NOVA classes have become extremely popular and the class size has been kept small to ensure that all the Scouts can actively participate. If you find that you are not going to be able to make the 2 sessions, please let us know ASAP, as we will give your spot to another Scout on the waitlist. If you are a No Show to the sessions and did not reach out to either Frank Burdsall, Michelle Byrne, or Nicole Kuzmin-Nichols; you will be placed at the end of the waitlist for future NOVA programs. Thank you for your understanding about this expectation.
